Together, We Can Recycle Better

Step up your home recycling with Feet on the Street!

Let’s face it. It's easy to get confused about recycling and put the wrong thing in the bin. That’s why there’s “Feet on the Street,” a new neighborhood research initiative from askHRgreen to help us all feel good about our recycling habits and protect our local environment.

How It Works

1

Visit Neighborhoods

Trained recycling teams will visit neighborhoods on collection days to provide guidance and support.

2

Check Recycling Carts

They'll check recycling carts for "contamination," which means items such as plastic bags, food waste, and other unaccepted materials.

3

Helpful Feedback

If needed, they'll leave helpful feedback about what is and isn’t accepted so residents can recycle with confidence next time.

Participating Cities/Counties

James City County, Newport News, Norfolk, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, York County

Why It Matters

Proper recycling makes a significant difference to our community and environment.

Higher-Quality Recyclables

Higher-quality recyclables mean fewer materials are rejected, leading to more effective recycling.

Improved Efficiency

Less contamination means a more cost-effective and efficient recycling program – and that benefits the entire community.

Environmental Benefits

Less waste reduces environmental impact and conserves valuable landfill space for future generations.

Did You Know

Bagging your recyclables and including food waste in your recycling cart makes it harder to recover quality materials that can be recycled.

What Can I Recycle?

Chances are, you use a lot of recyclable materials everyday, including cardboard, newspapers, cans, glass and plastic bottles.
